Madeleine Derveloy

Bio

Madeleine Derveloy is a multimedia artist whose work speaks to the concept of belonging, home, and change. Madeleine Derveloy was born in a small town in the deep south of the United States. She moved north and since then has been working towards figuring what makes us belong as well as probing injustices in the world. .Her work has been screened in festivals in the New England area, including the Green Mountain Film Festival where she won Best Comedy for “The Puppet.” Now, she is focusing on observing, exploring, and interacting with different settings of the world to inspire her work in filmmaking, animation, and multimedia art.  

 

She received her Bachelor of Arts in Directing Theatre and Film from Emerson College in 2018. She is now a current Masters Of Fine Arts student at Emerson College. 

 

Artist Statement

 

The world around us is so vast that there are too many things to experience in one lifetime. But that is not something that scares me. I want to spend my life exploring and interacting with all aspects of the world that I possibly can. I want to use my filmmaking, animation, and multimedia art skills to help interact, probe, understand and explore the world around me and share it with others. 

 

Growing up in a small town in the deep south, I learned very quickly what was expected of me. I was to go to college, get married, have children and settle down until my inevitable death. I thought that there was nowhere to go but this small town. Until I moved. I left my home, the only home I knew, and had to change my expectations against my will. It killed me. 

 

But through this I was reborn. I rose from the ashes with no clear cut expectations. I could do whatever I was passionate about. And through this revelation, I found theatre, painting, and film. But not only did I find my passion but I found a new home, a new sense of belonging, an adventure, in art. 

 

My purpose in life is to pass down my passion and help others find their way through art. Through a film, someone can feel like they belong. Through a painting, someone can see the beauty that exists in a different world. Through photos, someone can be inspired to see the world. I want to share my world to show people that your passion, your home, your own path in life is possible and it is whatever you want it to be.
